The Reconstruction Takes Shape

These views show the rebuilding of the grounds, track formation and track following the drainage work being done on the grounds of the Sydney Live Steam Locomotive Society.

These photos from the camera of Brian Carter.

Volume 5

The new bridge footing is being checked for level. The old one fell into the excavation work!

At last the bridge is back in position over the new drainage pit. Behind, implements fill, compact and shape the grounds.

Brian Rawlison (left) and Henry Spencer are fishplating up the track. New turf is still to be laid.

The overgrown grass has been slashed and the track bed is being formed and rolled. This area was not dug up during the excavations , but was used to store the bridge. The outer main on the right looks a bit sad after 5 months of disuse. It's important role was to stay as a datum. Now it has served its purpose it will be lifted, resleepered and reballasted.

The view after backfilling and levelling. A replacement tree has been planted and the turf is next. The boggy conditions of the top soil areas has been a feature throughout the work!

The turf at last!! In the background the track is being relaid on a wed mat base to seperate the ballast from the dirt.

This is the main entrance to the main pit which connects to the 17m shaft in the street behind & then to the river. Our main entrance footbridge is above. This level structure provides for strollers 7 wheel chairs.

A view of our new concreted entrance.

The elevated beams are back in place and the track is being laid across the grate. Curved strips of suitable (different) thicknesses are placed under the track for support and superelevation.

Another view of the track going back clearly showing the weedmat underlay and some preliminary ballasting. The turf really looks good!

Our bridge over its pit with the new turf.

At last!! A time for celebration!! The mats are a temporary measure in case someone falls onto the grate. This is the June 1999 running day.
