Sydney Live Steam Locomotive Society.

1998-Our 50th Anniversary!

This year we are 50 years old!
To celebrate we held a special anniversary weekend on the 21/22 March 1998
.

Saturday 21 March 1998-
This was our usual public running day, except that we opened from 10am. A special display of historic live steam & model engineering was held in the clubhouse. Models on display included 2 1/2 inch gauge locos of yesteryear. 'LBSC' Olympiad & Dyak, & a 4-6-2 four cylinder Princess were early passenger haulers for the Society. A 2 1/2 inch gauge 36 class completed the smallest gauge. There was a 3 1/2 inch gauge 'King', Mona, Tich, Lion, 36 class, P Class & Brittania. In 5 inch part built locos included a 1 1/2 inch scale Shay, South Australian 500 class, Brittania, Sweet Pea & a Baldwin 2-6-0. A finely detailed 55 (K) class, 0-4-2 Ajax, & a well detailed 50 class tender completed the loco display. A 3 inch scale Foden steam wagonoccupied the centre of the room. There were goods trains and a variety of locos to see running as well as our usual heavy passenger hauling. Spectacular train operation with a double headed Pacifics on 6 cars on the inner main, and 59 plus 30T combination on the outer main were just some of the highlights.

Sunday 22 March 1998-
Sunday was the day that members of other clubs came to run & share the celebrations with us. Visitors came from as far afield as South Australia, Victoria, Canberra & Newcastle with their locos. The hot conditions kept the numbers to around 120. The SLSLS President Warwick Allison spoke of the Society's past association with council, and this was responded to by the Mayor of Ryde, Councillor Peter Graham. Barry Glover, President of the Australian Association of Live Steamers spoke of the significant achievements of the Society.
