Ryde Council is constructing a huge drainage tunnel from beyond West Ryde shopping centre to the Parramatta River. Some large inlets are to be located in the grounds of the Sydney Live Steam Locomotive Society. To permit construction we have cancelled our February running day and due to delays due to a particularly bad run of wet weather e have also cancelled our March running day. 34 members and friends turned up to dismantle the tracks on Sunday 17 January 1999. The Excavator gently places the bridge down on timber blocks.

Here the excavator has just lifted the bridge clear of the piers.

Getting the excavator in was a bit of a squeeze. Here it levels the ground for access. One drainage pit will be dug just in front of the bucket.

Once the elevated track beams were removed our team got to work to clean up the piers. These piers were too tough for the excavator to simply pull out. Excavation on all sides is required first.

A car jack was used to break the mortar joint. Here Andrew the Site Engineer, helps club member Lionel to remove the first beam.

Look-no track!!

The excavator only managed to snap off the first pier. SLSLS is renowned for the size and strength of its foundations!

Work is just about done. The shaded elevated track makes a good vantage point to watch the lifting of the bridge.
