Maximum Size: Usually 24cm. Some individual specimens can grow bigger (to about 28cm).

Description: This turtle has a short neck, large head and powerful jaws.  It's carapace (top part of the shell) is light brown to dark brown. Aged specimens can be almost black. The plastron (bottom part of the shell) ranges from a creamish-yellow to almost black. 

Temperament: Usually gentle, calm and friendly.

Food: In captivity, a diet of freshwater fish, supplemented with freshwater yabbies, freshwater prawns, freshwater snails is suitable. Freshwater plants also make up part of their diet. Avoid saltwater fish. Hatchlings will also readily consume mosquito larvae (wrigglers).
