Semi-Italian Relay
On the 1st May, eight teams competed in the inaugural “Three Weapon Team Competition”, hosted by Penrith Fencing Academy. This competition, based on the annual “Semi Italian Relay Competition” devised and hosted by Newcastle PCYC Fencing Club, caters for those smaller clubs who have difficulty raising a team of six fencers for an Italian Relay.
This was a first time competition experience for some of the smaller clubs and the friendly, relaxed atmosphere made a perfect introduction to competition. Despite a strong camaraderie among the fencers, the day saw some serious fencing, especially in the final rounds, with Penrith Blue taking home the trophy. The final results were;
1st - Penrith Blue (PAF)
2nd - Team Two and a Half Men (SU)
Equal 3rd - Penrith White (PAF) & Southern Highlands Fencing Academy
5th - University of NSW Fencing Club
6th - Blue Mountains Fencing Club
7th - Penrith Red (PAF)
8th - Bathurst (CSU Fencing Club)
This competition will be held annually and will form part of the Western Sydney Regional Development Program. A perpetual trophy has been generously donated by Penrith Fencing Academy. Many thanks to Penrith for providing the venue for the competition and congratulations on the development of your impressive new premises, the only permanent fencing venue in the state. Thanks also to Sally for feeding the crowd.

Bronze Medal Foil Club Teams Competition
On the 19th of September, Penrith Academy of Fencing entered a team consisting of Daryl Mason, James Frith and Jacob Turner. They fenced well in the preliminary bouts winning two and losing only one. In the first DE they won in a close bout, but were knocked out in the following bout, finishing up with a bronze medal. It was a an enjoyable day for all in a relaxed and social competition.
Southern Highlands Cup Results
On the 16th of July, a group of Penrith fencers, travelled down to Mittagong for the 3rd Annual Southern Highlands Cup. The Penrith Academy of Fencing won the friendly club competition in its first year, and retained the Cup last year when they tied with Southern Highlands. This year PAF came 3rd, handing the Cup to Sydney Uni. Afterwards our competitors kept the tradition of stopping at McDonalds on the way back home. All round it was a fun and enjoyable night of fencing for all.
Under 15 National Championships Results
Dayna Mason and James Frith
Sydney hosted the Australian Under 15 and Cadet National Championships during the July school holidays. Dayna and James entered their first individual national competition. Dayna was competing in a strong field of competitors. She progressed through the qualifying rounds and was eliminated in the quarter finals, finishing 8th in Australia. The following day as a member of NSW team, she was heavily involved as the team first defeated Queensland and then Victoria. In a close and gripping final with the Singapore national team, NSW prevailed to win the gold medal.
James entered the respective boys’ event and fenced strongly throughout his qualifying pool. James was defeated in the second elimination round and finished 17th in Australia. He also was selected as a member of the NSW B team and fenced well in a narrow loss to the New Zealand national team. Both fencers displayed excellent commitment and effort in the many weeks of preparation and in their performance over two days of competition.

Under 13 Gilt Foil – 28 Feb 10
Two girls from PAF attended the U13 Gilt Foil competition on Sunday 28 Feb, 2010. Miranda Van Denbout attended her first competition with Sabina Mason. With a strong pool of eight girls, the PAF girls represented the club very well against a strong group. At the end of the pools, Sabina was first and Miranda in a strong fourth.
In the DE, Miranda fought well in her first DE against a tough competitor from TSC. From 8-2 down Miranda was able to come back unfortunately loosing the bout 10 -5 with 30 sec to go in the second period.
Sabina had a little more luck dispatching her first opponent in the DE 10-2. She then avenged her Club mate by dispatching the TSC who beat Miranda 10-5 which placed her in the final against Christine Yeom of Abbotsleigh. The final match up was a nail biting affair with the score being 2-1 after the first period with Sabina down. But Sabina kept her cool and fought back to eventually win the bout 7-6 and winning a Gilt Foil presented by Peter Witkop.
Well done to both the girls.
