BACK TO FRONT APPLIQUE practice block

Finished size approx.. 9" (22cm)

Requirements (note: sizes include 1/4" seam)

• 1 x centre square 7" (17cm)
• 4 x corner triangles - cut 2 x 5 1/2" (13.5cm) squares, sliced diagonally
• backing, 10" (25cm) square
• thin wadding (batting), square 10" (25cm)
• binding, strip 38" (92cm) long
• scraps for apple and leaves

STEP 1 - stitch a triangle to each side of the centre square

STEP 2 - QUILTING

• Mark for quilting: evenly divide each side of the centre square and lightly mark quilting lines diagonally (as in the diagram) all the way from corner to corner.

• Layer the backing, wadding and pieced top. baste and quilt the marked lines.

• Trim edges and bind the quilt.

STEP 3 - BACK TO FRONT applique

• Trace and cut a cardboard shape for each part of the design.

• Position on back of applique fabric and cut out adding 1/4" seam

• Thread baste fabric over cardboard shapes. Lightly starch seam allowance and press. Leave to cool then remove basting and remove cardboard.

• Position as desired and straight-stitch machine applique through all layers. Secure ends.
