Office of the Public GuardianThe Broad Aims of the Office of the Public Guardian. The Office of the Public Guardian promotes the rights and interests of people with disabilities through the practice of guardianship and advocacy. Role of the Office of the Public Guardian. The Office of the Public Guardian acts as a substitute decision maker for a person who has a disability, an incapacity to make their own decisions, and a need for a guardian when appointed to do so. The Public Guardian makes decisions in such areas as accommodation, services and consenting to medical and dental treatment. The Public Guardian also advocates for the services and support needed by people under guardianship. The Public Guardian is commonly appointed as guardian by the Guardianship Tribunal. Where to contact the Office of the Public Guardian: There are currently three office locations at Blacktown, Gosford and Sydney. Contact the Office at Blacktown if the person you support resides in the outer western suburbs of Sydney, the Blue Mountains or around Bathurst or Orange. Contact the office in Gosford if the person you support resides in the Hunter Valley, Newcastle or Lakes area. Contact the Central Sydney Office for all other areas. When you call, ask to speak to the Officer Responsible for the person you support. If your cannot contact this person ask to speak to the Officer on duty. Urgent Decisions: If you need to contact the Public Guardian for an urgent decision outside of office hours, call (02) 9265 3184 and you will hear a recorded message which will give you the number for a pager service. Give the pager service your name and number and a staff member from the Office of the Public Guardian will return your call. Do not give any information regarding the client to the paging service.
