Office of the Public Guardian

The Broad Aims of the Office of the Public Guardian.

The Office of the Public Guardian promotes the rights and interests of people with disabilities through the practice of guardianship and advocacy.

Role of the Office of the Public Guardian.

The Office of the Public Guardian acts as a substitute decision maker for a person who has a disability, an incapacity to make their own decisions, and a need for a guardian when appointed to do so. The Public Guardian makes decisions in such areas as accommodation, services and consenting to medical and dental treatment. The Public Guardian also advocates for the services and support needed by people under guardianship. The Public Guardian is commonly appointed as guardian by the Guardianship Tribunal.
