 A Mission with hope...
Silver Street Mission began in August 1999 as a successor to Marrickville Baptist Church. Marrickville Baptist began in 1887 as a mission centre offshoot from Petersham Baptist Church.

In late 1998, Calvary Indonesian Baptist Fellowship began meeting in the Silver Street buildings with a view to eventual combined membership. The aim is to work cooperatively and seek to support each other. We aim to review the Constitution to provide for both S S M and C I B F to become participating congregations of Marrickville Baptist Church, which continues as an umbrella coordinating structure.

The Pastoral leaders of each group are Rev. Sotarduga (Tom) Sitompul (CIBF) andRev. Peter R Green (SSM and MBC). The Mission has recently appointed Mr Nephtali Bautista to pastor the Philipino fellowship as it develops.

Marrickville is one of Australia's most multi-cultural areas, with Greeks, Lebanese, Pacific Islanders, South-East Asians and many others widely represented. Despite the diversity, the majority work hard to create harmony.

The church itself is increasingly multi-cultural. Our aim is to bring people from a variety of backgrounds together in Christ.

Mission leaders include:

  • Mrs Divina Bautista, Secretary, English-speaking congregation.
  • Mr Nephtali Bautista, Treasurer, English-speaking congregation.
  • Mr Alexander Sitohang, Secretary, Indonesian-speaking congregation.
  • Miss Joyce Bautista, Youth leader.

A POTTED HISTORY

MBC had twelve members in 1887. In its heyday, it hit about 200 members, but declined due to massive post World War II population shifts.

CIBF began in 1997
at Surry Hills.

All three congregations (SSM, Filipino and Indonesian) have regular attenders from a range of ethnic communities.

Recently Mr Sitohang has become increasingly responsible for administration in the Indonesian congregation.
