Returning to Australia
in 1966 I was appointed as teacher-in-charge of music at Asquith Boys'
High School in Sydney before accepting a secondment position at Alexander
Mackie Teachers' College in 1970 as vocal specialist in secondary music
and primary teacher education programs.
In 1971 I accepted an offer of a permanent position as lecturer in Music
and Music education at Alexander Mackie Teachers' College remaining on
the staff through several amalgamations firstly, in 1981, as the St. George
Institute of Education of the Sydney College of Advanced Education and
in 1990 as the St George Campus of the University of NSW.
During the period 1970-1995 I had part time employment with the Sydney
Conservatorium of Music as a member of the singing faculty. In 1979 I
was appointed as an examiner in singing and piano for the Australian Music
Examinations Board examining at all levels in both subjects to Fellowship
Diploma.
I have gained vast experience as a music adjudicator at eisteddfods and
music festivals throughout Australia, the most recent being the Royal
South Street Ballarat Competition, Melbourne Sun Aria Competition, Launceston
Competition, Warrnambool Eisteddfod (Victoria), Queensland State Eisteddfod
(Bundaberg, Gympie, Rockhampton, Toowoomba), North Queensland Eisteddfod
(Cairns, Townsville, Mackay, Innisfail), Darwin Eisteddfod (NT), Alice
Springs (NT), City of Sydney Eisteddfod, the MacDonalds Performing Arts
Challenge, and numerous NSW country and Sydney suburban eisteddfodau.
I conduct piano, singing and choral workshops for the Music Teachers'
Association of New South Wales, Sydney Conservatorium of Music and as
consultant for community groups in the more remote areas of New South
Wales including Moree, Narrabri, Mungindi, Forbes and Young giving pedagogical
assistance to teachers and advice about preparation of pupils for examinations
for AMEB and Higher School Certificate performance.
In 1995 I was given special leave
to undertake study and research into vocal pedagogy related to young children's
singing traveling extensively in Australia visiting private teaching studios
in Victoria, Queensland and New South Wales as well as England and USA.
I had the privilege of attending courses at the Westminster Choir College,
Princeton, New Jersey where I also observed private lessons of students
of Professor Marvin Keenze. While attending courses at the Guildhall School
of Music and Drama in London I observed private lessons by Professor Molie
Petrie.
I have published reports of my research
in music education journals including Australia Voice published
by the Australian National Association of Teachers and Singing, Singing
published by Association of Teacher of Singing (UK), and Australian
Music Teacher's Magazine published by Boss Publications. I was the
founder of the Jeroun Singers of Sydney, a chamber ensemble which made
regular broadcasts on ABC Australian national radio and television. I
have also been the musical director for numerous operatic and musical
theater productions for community theatrical and musical societies, secondary
school and tertiary institutions.
I am a member of several professional
music teacher organizations, including:
Music Teacher's Association of NSW
(Honorary Life)
Australian National Association
of Teachers of Singing
Orff Schulwerk Association of New South Wales
Australian Society for Music Education
National Association of Teachers of Singing (USA)
Association of Teachers of Singing (UK)
I am currently a board member of
the AMEB (NSW) representing private music teachers in New South Wales,
and have served continuously on the Board for over twenty years representing
