The
Collie
The true
origins of the Rough Collie are shrouded in mystery, just like the
highlands of
Scotland. The Collie's forebears spent much of their time in
the Scottish
highlands and on the English moors, helping Shepherds tend
their flocks of sheep
which they guarded by night then herded by day.
Queen Victoria made the Rough Collie popular
by owning several herself,
they were part of the Royal household. Rough Collies then became fashionable
and their popularity grew from strength to strength, their
numbers increased
dramatically and so did their popularity in the Show ring. Leaving the land
behind they have now become one of the Great Beauties of the
Show Dog World, but one must never forget their
Working Heritage.
The Rough Collie is a devoted member of
the family, and you will never have
a better baby-sitter, they like nothing
better than to be with children
fussing and worrying about their welfare.
The Rough
Collie is a loyal,
trustworthy member of any family; their friendly intelligent
disposition makes them a pleasure to own, and very easy to train.
They will give you a
lifetime of unconditional love.
The Rough Collie's natural herding
instincts make's
them a reliable and
protective watchdog,
barking a warning if
an intruder is approaching,
but you must remember the Rough Collie is not an attack
dog his
temperament does not allow
for this type of aggressive behaviour.
Their
loyalty and love for their master and family are legendary,
as depicted in books and movies, many rescue scenes,
were taken
from actual
events involving Rough Collies. Undoubtedly influenced
by the
famous Terhune Books
written about the many adventures
of Rough Collies who were always depicted as hero's. These
exciting stories no doubt influenced the story lines
in the T.V. series Lassie.
