Yarrunga
Botanical name: Eucalyptus saligna.
Distribution: Yarrunga grows from the South Coast of New South Wales through to Southern Queensland. It is a tall hardwood reaching up to 55m (180ft) with diameters to 2m (6ft).
Colour: The timber is deep pink through to a dark red-brown.
The timber: Yarrunga is generally straight grained with slight interlocking. The texture is moderately coarse and even. Gum veins can be a feature of this timber in grades lower than clear.
Mechanical properties: A strong, tough and heavy wood it is not normally suitable for steam bending. It has a high crush strength. Kiln dry density of approx. 850kgs/m3 (53lb/ft3).
Working properties: Despite its density Yarrunga works well with moderate resistance to hand and machine tools. It nails well but pre drilling is recommended. It glues with little difficulty and works to an excellent high polish, taking finishing treatments well.
Uses: Flooring, panelling, furniture, decking, turnery and is available as a veneer.
Availability: Moderate to good.
