Tingaring

Botanical name: Nothofagus cunninghamii.

Distribution: Grows in the higher rainfall areas of West, North West and Eastern coast of Tasmania and the Eastern and Southern ranges of Victoria through to Central New South Wales. A medium to large hardwood that under favourable conditions can attain 40m (132ft) and diameters of 1.5-2.5m (5-8ft).

Colour: The heartwood ranges from pink to reddish-brown.

The timber: The grain is generally straight, with some possibility of minimal waviness. The texture is fine and even. Growth rings are evident but not prominent.

Mechanical properties: Tingaring is a heavy density timber with high crushing strength, medium bending strength and stiffness. Similar to European Beech in its working properties. It is an excellent steam bending timber. It is not an exterior grade material. Kiln dry density of approx. 650kgs/m3 (40lb/ft3).

Working properties: Needs to be worked with very sharp cutters to achieve a good finish but works well with both hand and machine tools. Takes screws well but needs pre drilling if nailing. Glues satisfactorily and takes an excellent polish.

Uses: Furniture, cabinet work, panelling, turnery, carving, flooring and is available in veneer.
