Terang
Botanical name: Eucalyptus sideroxylon, Eucalyptus fibrosa
and Eucalyptus crebra
Distribution: Both species grow throughout North Central Victoria, Inland New South Wales and Southern Queensland. This hardwood attains a height of up to 30m (100ft) and diameters from 400mm(4ft) to 600mm(2ft).
Colour: Terang ranges in colour from a dark red through to reddish brown.
The timber: The grain is generally interlocked but even in texture.
Mechanical properties: Very stiff, high crushing strength and not classed as a steam bending timber. Highly durable in external applications. Kiln dry density of approx. 900kgs/m3 (56lb/ft3).
Working properties: Due to the interlocking grain and its high density Terang is not easy to work with hand or machine tools unless cutters have a reduced angle and are kept sharp to avoid grain tear out. Pre drilling is recommended to avoid splitting. Glues well and finishes to a medium polish.
Uses: Flooring, decking, garden furniture, construction, turnery. Terang is available in veneer.
Availability: Common.
