Garigal

Garigal

Botanical name: Eucalyptus polycarpa

Distribution: Grows throughout Central to Northern Queensland and the Northern Territory. A medium sized hardwood, Garigal attains a height of 45m (140ft).

Colour: The heartwood is a red-brown deepening to a darker red with age with blood red flecks uniformly dispersed throughout the timber.

The timber: The grain is straight and texture is moderately coarse and even.

Mechanical properties: This highly durable timber can be used for both external and interior applications. High crush strength but does not yield to steam bending techniques. Very stable in service. Kiln dry density of 900kgs/m3 (56lb/ft3).

Working properties: Not as prone to grain tear out as most Australian Red Eucalypts, but still requires sharp cutters and a reduced cutter angle of 15 degrees. Works well with both hand and machine tools. Glues satisfactorily, and works to a high polish. Garigal accepts most finishing treatments.

Uses: Flooring, furniture, decking, turnery, cabinet work. Garigal is available as a veneer.

Availability: Good.
