Galga
Botanical name: Eucalyptus camaldulensis
Distribution: Found extensively growing along most of the inland waterways of mainland Australia. It is the most widely distributed Eucalypt in Australia. Generally a large multibranched spreading hardwood with a short thick trunk. It can reach up to 45m (150ft) with butt diameters of 4m (14ft) although 2m (6ft) is more usual. In common with many red Eucalypts the timber presents a large percentage of gum veins and gum pockets.
Colour: Galga presents a rich reddish to blood red timber. Quarter cut boards an attractive fiddleback figure.
Mechanical properties: Excellent strength properties but unsuitable for steam bending and moderate strength characteristics due to the interlocking grain. The grain is close and even but frequently interlocked. Kiln dry density of 850kgs/m3 (53lb/ft3).
Working properties: The presence of interlocked grain requires a reduced cutting angle of 20 degrees to prevent tear out. Cutting edges need to be kept sharp during working. Pre drilling is recommended to avoid splitting when nailing and screwing. Glues well. Works to a high polish and takes most finishes well. Turns and carves well if care is taken during procedures.
Uses: Flooring, turnery, carving, furniture, stair treads, garden sleepers, paving blocks and is available in veneer.
Availability: Plentiful.
