Bodalla
Botanical name: Eucalyptus teriticornis
Distribution: Territory stretches from Victoria through to Northern Queensland. A large hardwood that reaches 45m (150ft).
Colour: Heartwood is a dark rich red and similar to Galga but lacks fiddleback.
The timber: The grain is generally straight but some degree of interlocked grain can be expected. Texture is moderately coarse and even.
Mechanical properties: The timber is durable and suitable for exterior applications. High crush resistance and low steam bending grading. Kiln dry density of approx. 900kgs/m3 (56lb/ft3).
Working properties: Due to the interlocked grain working Bodalla can sometimes be difficult. Cutter angles need to be reduced to 15 degrees and cutters kept sharp to reduce grain tear out. Pre drilling is recommended to avoid splitting. Can be glued without difficulty. Takes a good polish and accepts most surface treatments.
Uses: Furniture, flooring, cabinet work, construction, turnery, carving and is available in a veneer.
Availability: Plentiful.
