Wilkatana

Wilkatana

Botanical name: Grevillia robusta.

Distribution: Wilkatata grows in the forests of Northern Queensland although stands are found along the Northern Coast of New South Wales. This hardwood grows to 40m (125ft).

Colour: The heartwood is pale pinkish brown darkening slightly on exposure. The rays are prominent and vary in size. Very similar to true Oak.

The timber: The grain is generally straight. The texture is coarse and even.

Mechanical properties: The timber is principally an interior grade material. It is stable and can be used in steam bending applications. Kiln dry density of approx. 550kgs/m3 (34lb/ft3).

Working properties: Reasonably easy to work with hand and machine tools. Cutter angles need to be reduced to 20 degrees to achieve excellent results. No pre-drilling is required for nails or screws. Wilkatana can be glued satisfactorily although the carbohydrates than are sometimes extruded from the timber can effect the strength of the glue joint. Finishes highlight the natural features of the timber. It is available in both quarter and back sawn boards.

Uses: Beautiful furniture, cabinet work, panelling, turnery and flooring. It is not available as a veneer.

Availability: Scarce.
