Kanunda

Botanical name: Orites excelsa.

Distribution: A hardwood that is found in the coastal ranges from Central New South Wales through to Southern Queensland. The tree is of medium height at maturity.

Colour: The heartwood is pinkish brown and almost indistinguishable from Wilkatana except that the rays which are prominent are small and very fine.

The timber: The grain is generally straight. The texture is coarse and even.

Mechanical properties: The timber is principally an interior grade material. It is stable and can be used in steam bending applications. Kiln dry density of approx. 600kgs/m3 (37lb/ft3).

Working properties: Reasonably easy to work with hand and machine tools. Cutter angles need to be reduced to 20 degrees to achieve excellent results. No pre-drilling is required for nails or screws. Kanunda can be glued satisfactorily. Finishes highlight the natural features of the timber. It is available in both quarter and back sawn boards.

Uses: Beautiful furniture, cabinet work, panelling, turnery and flooring. It is not available as a veneer.
