Kajarbi
Botanical name: Casuarina cunninghamiana
Distribution: A medium to large hardwood is commonly found on coastal river banks throughout New South Wales, Queensland and the Northern Territory.
Colour: The heartwood ranges from pinkish grey through to pale chocolate but the timber is distinctive due to its prominent rays, a feature it shares with many of the Australian Casuarinas.
The timber: A moderately fine and even texture with a straight grain.
Mechanical properties: Fairly durable, low crushing strength, not suitable for steam bending. Kiln dry density of approx. 700kgs/m3 (43lb/ft3).
Working properties: Kajarbi works well with hand or machine tools. It finishes to a fine smooth polished surface and takes most finishing treatments well. It glues without problems.
Uses: Very attractive furniture using either back or quarter sawn timber, unusual flooring and panelling, carving and turnery. It is not available as a veneer.
Availability: Fairly limited.
