Carbeen
Botanical name: Eucalyptus tessellaris
Distribution: A small to medium hardwood that grows from the border of New South Wales through to Northern Queensland from the coast inland to about 500km (300 miles). It can attain a height of 30m (100ft) but usually averages 20m (65ft).
Colour: The heartwood is a rich dark chocolate colour with an attractive appearance.
The timber: Texture is relatively fine and even with an interlocked grain. It has a slightly greasy nature. Very high density.
Mechanical properties: A heavy moderately durable, stiff timber Carbeen is not suitable for steam bending. Kiln dry density of 950kgs/m3 (59lb/ft3).
Working properties: Despite its density Carbeen works well with both hand and machine tools. Sharp cutter blades will minimise grain tear out and cutter angles should be reduced to 15 degrees. Pre drilling is mandatory before using nails or screws to avoid splitting. It works to a very fine finish and takes finishing treatments well despite its slight greasy texture.
Uses: Heavy but very attractive furniture, heavy construction, flooring, decking, panelling, garden sleepers, carving and turnery. It is not available as a veneer.
Availability: Moderate.
