Botanical name: Eucalyptus regnans, obliqua and delegatensis.

Distribution: These species grow through Tasmania and Central to Eastern Victoria. True forest giants they can attain heights of 98m (320ft) but average 75m (245ft) with average diameters of 2.5m (8ft).

Colour: Runs from pale yellow to very pale brown through to pale pink.

The timber: Usually very straight grain with some fiddleback on quarter sawn boards. Texture moderately coarse. Growth rings can be conspicuous with darker latewood.

Mechanical properties: All three species have medium bending strength and stiffness and high crushing strength. Can be steam bent but some fibre disruption can occur. Kiln dry densities vary from 550kgs/m3 (34lb/ft3) and 750kgs/m3 (47lb/ft3).

Working properties: It is generally easy to work with hand and machine tools with slight blunting of edges. Pre drilling for nails and screws to avoid splitting. Glues satisfactorily, takes most stains and finishes well.

Uses: Used extensively in Australia for furniture, cabinet work, joinery, panelling, flooring and general construction. It is available in veneer.

Availability: The most commercially available timber in Australia.
