Botanical name: Eucalyptus papuana.

Distribution: Limited to the Northern inland areas of Queensland and the Northern Territory. A tall narrow hardwood Bimbi reaches 45m (140ft) but with a narrow trunk.

Colour: A rich brown midway between milk and dark chocolate.

The timber: Mostly straight grain with moderately coarse and even texture. Fiddleback figure is fairly common and narrow black gum veins may be present.

Mechanical properties: A stiff timber not suitable for steam bending. High durability and high crush strength. Kiln dry density of approx. 900kgs/m3 (56lb/ft3).

Working properties: Care must be taken when using hand or machine tools. Cutter angles must be reduced to 15 degrees and cutters kept sharp to avoid grain tear out. Pre drilling is recommended. Glues well and take a fine polish and accepts most finishing treatments.

Uses: Flooring, decking, construction and turnery.
