John GAY
born 1811 at NORFOLK, ENGLAND.
John married(1) ?? Note: A John Gay married Sophia Lansdown on 4/9/1826 at King's Lynn, St Nicholas, Norfolk. They had (?) children.
Australia Bound John - Those convict days
John was tried at the Norfolk Quarter Sessions on 8th March 1837 for stealing copper and sentenced for 14 years. He had one former
conviction for 6 months, was a Protestant, could neither read nor write and worked as a labourer. John was 27 years of age, 5 ft 5
3/4 ins tall with a ruddy and freckled complexion, light hair and grey eyes. He had a small mole on the right side of the throat
and an angular scar inside the left wrist. John was married and had 3 children, 1 male and 2 females that were left in England.
John's profession was that of a labourer and he could neither read nor write.
John arrived in Australia on the 9th February 1838 on board the convict ship Emma Eugenia together with 199 other male convicts.
John's convict Standing No was 38-553 and Indent No 119.
The Emma Eugenia was built in London in 1819 and was a Class A1 ship of 452 tones. On the voyage, which left Portsmouth, England
on 6th June 1837 and arrived Sydney on 9th February 1838 the Master was Giles Wade and the Surgeon-superintendent was B Wylie.
The ship departed London on the 30th June 1837 with 200 male English convicts, sailing via Teneriffe, in the Canary Islands
and taking a total of 104 days. (Note: the details in the Emma Eugenia are incomplete and need some research).
General Information
It was apparently not unusual for men to remarry after being 'across the seas' for more than 7 years.
John was given a Conditional Pardon (No 48/706) on 1st March 1848 prior to marrying Elizabeth Jackson. John's pardon took effect,
"in all parts of the world, except the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland".
John married(2) Elizabeth Jackson on 28/6/1849 in Sydney, Australia. Elizabeth was born 1823 at NOTTINGHAMSHIRE, ENGLAND.
Australia Bound
Elizabeth arrived in Australia on board the ship the "Elizabeth" on the 3rd April 1845. She arrived as a
governess, never in service, daughter of John Armstrong. She was of the Episcopalian faith and could both read and write, being
employed by Thomas Patch of Gresford on the Patterson River at £15 per annum. She gave up this engagement went to live with Mr
Pugh, a grocer of Market Street, Sydney. Elizabeth died 10/6/1865 in Riley Street, Sydney from burns causing great exhaustion.
John & Elizabeth had 1 child John George see below.
John married(3) Francis Davis (nee Hasselwood) on 22/7/1865 at Scott's Church, Sydney. Francis was a widower-householder from Paddington.
Before her marriage to John, Francis married Morgan Davis in 1845 at St Andrews, Scott's Church, Presbyterian, Sydney. Morgan was
born c.1798 and died 1852 aged 54 years. Francis died 1886 (Sydney, father unknown "Hezlewood")
John died 5/12/1884 from chronic bronchitis aged 76 years at 1 Riley Lane, Woolloomooloo, Sydney. John & Francis had no children.
John & Elizabeth's only child John George:
John George
was born 4/5/1863 at Riley Street, Woolloomooloo, Sydney. Father listed as aged 53 years and a gardener from Norfolk, England.
John's birth certificate shows that there were other children but on his father's death certificate, for which it seems he supplied
the details no other children appear. It would appear that John was unaware of his father's previous marriage and reason for
being in Australia.
John George married Ellen Lloyd on 5/11/1884 at the Congregational Church in Devonshire Street, Sydney. George was
listed as a Dealer from Sydney and Ellen a Dropmaker (dressmaker) from Randwick. Ellen was born 4/9/1857 at Darling Point, Sydney.
Her parents were Richard, as aged 43 years, a gardener from Derbyshire, Wales & Esabella (nee Newby) aged 34 years from
Westmoreland, England. There were 2 other children, Richard 2 and Alice 1.
Richard and Isabella LLOYD were married on the 25/9/1848 in the parish church of Windermere, County of Westmoreland, England.
They were both of full age with Richard listed as a gardener. Richard's fathers name was John Lloyd a coachman of Wallow ???
while Isabella's father was James Newby a gardener. Richard's address was "Wallow on the Hill".
Ellen died 25/1/1931 from heart failure aged 73 years at South Kensington & John George died 29/2/1932 from a heart attack,
aged 68 years at Canterbury. John George and Ellen had six(6) children:

25/5/1930 aged years at Daceyville.
John & Elsie had 4 children: Irol, Thelma, Leslie & Allan.
George N born 1887, married Celesta S Rugless in 1911. Celesta had 2 previous children, Celesta S born 1906 & Sarah born 1911. John & Celesta had two (2) children, Ruby M (b.1913) & Pearl Celesta (b.1915 & d. 5/12/1957).
Annie Elizabeth born 17/6/1889, married(1)
William M John HIGLETT in 1909. William was killed during WWI. Annie & William Higlett had four (4) children,
Dorothy M (b.1909), William John "Mickey" (b.1910), Henry Miller "Bluey" (b.1913) &
Joyce (b.1918).
Annie married(2) William GILLING in 1917. William was born 1892 at WESTHAM,
LONDON, ENGLAND. Annie and William Gilling had two (2) children, Frank Neil (b.24/8/1920) & Richard Albert
(b.3/5/1924).
Gladys E "Sissy" born 1892, married Charles BARNES in 1915. Gladys & Charles had six (6) children, Margaret E (b.1915), George (b.1916 & d.1916), Gladys I (b.1918), Thelma, Charles & Sadie.
Bertie Lloyd born 28/10/1894 & died 11/2/1958, married Amy Alice Bridger on 27/12/1919. Amy was born 15/4/1895 & died 16/7/1988. Bertie & Amy had four (4) children, Iris Amy Eileen (b.16/10/1925), Bertram Ralph (b.10/6/1921 & d.1992), Ruth Ellen (b.2/8/1930), Mary Valda Dorothy (b.27/8/1933) & Ross Morris (b.30/4/1941).
Eva Jane born 1898 & died 5/8/1961, married
David Thomas EVANS on 26/2/1918. David was born 2.5.1890 & died 22/8/1961. Eva and David had four (4)
children, Gaynor Elizabeth (b.9/4/1919 & d.24/1/1950), Noel David (b.18/12/1921 & d.3/4/1995),
Wallace (b.17/12/1926) & Phyllis Eva (b.23/5/1934).
