Performance enhancement using the Buteyko Method

The Buteyko Method is already being used in the area of sport to achieve gold medal results for its users. Witness rower Jaime Fernandez, swimmer Matthew Dunn, walker Dion Russel, ironman Craig Riddington, squash champion Carin Clonda and footballer Con Barrell who, as reported in the Courier Mail and other newspapers, have had their medal winning performances enhanced through breathing retraining.

Correct breathing can also be of benefit in other fields such as singing, dance and speaking. Jennifer brings 30 years of performance experience to the task of superimposing the Buteyko Method into the lifestyle and performance endeavors of her pupils.

We breathe 20-30,000 times a day. If we are breathing incorrectly, we are going to have a profoundly detrimental effect on our health and as every singer, dancer or sportsperson well knows, if you don't feel very well, you can't perform well. Performance is, after all, the way we are judged in the arts and sport. We are only as good as the particular performance we have just done. By reprogramming the way we breathe and learning to apply our new skills to our particular performance needs, we can improve our techniques manifestly.

For example, singers will find their vocal chords and throat do not dry out, become sore, raspy or croaky and the need to yawn will diminish or disappear. Their diaphramatic strength increases resulting in more control and more volume. Also their vocal tone becomes richer. Dancers will maintain high energy without feeling breathless or exhausted following a performance and sports people can look forward to significantly increasing their stamina and endurance.

Nasal breathing diminishes or eliminates the involvement of lactic acid in muscular activity by promoting maximum delivery of oxygen to the working parts of the body. It also cuts down dehydration, perspiration and recovery time. If asthmatics learn how to breathe correctly, they can participate in singing, dancing and sport without bronchodilating drugs
