BACK PAIN AND BREATHING

from The Blue Mountains Gazette

“Back pain, whether chronic or acute, can put the life of the sufferer on hold for many days or weeks at a time” says Jennifer Harris of Buteyko Breathe Easy and Pilates.

“Obvious causes for back pain may be attributed to trauma, habitually poor posture when sitting, standing and sleeping, inherited structural abnormalities and muscular tension. Back pain related to muscular tension is stress related. The “fight or flight” reflex engenders increased skeletal muscle tension in the abdomen, lower back, neck, shoulders, solar plexus and perineum. When these areas are tense the breathing moves to the upper chest and becomes shallow and unhealthy. This causes even more tension and distress to the entire body as the body becomes deprived of a healthy oxygen delivery. Whatever the initial trigger for back pain the “fight or flight” reflex will engage the moment there is pain. The problem becomes cyclic. Conversely, when the breathing technique of the individual is poor, the misused thoracic muscles and cinching of the abdomen actually work in opposition to other muscles in the torso and cause such tension that back pain is often triggered.

Learning to breathe well involves making beneficial postural changes and re-education of the breathing technique.

The breathing and stretch Pilates classes which I teach in Hazelbrook are designed to improve all over health by synchronizing breathing and movement for every day living. All breathing lessons are by individual appointment”.
