ADEQUATE REST AND BREATHING
from The Blue Mountains Gazette
“Taking the time for rest and recreation that allows you to truly disconnect from the have to, must do pressures of modern life will enhance your ability to breathe well” says Jennifer Harris of Buteyko Breathe Easy.
“Stress in all its guises activates the “Fight or Flight” response in the body. The “Fight or Flight” cause the release of adrenalin which in turn increases the breathing rate and size which results in hyperventilation. This is a very destructive chain of events for our well being.
“True rest comes only with practice. It takes discipline to say “no” to the movie that is on later than our bedtime, “no” to the extra portion of food that our body has to work extra hard at metabolizing, “no” to that hard physical work out when we are already feeling ragged and “no” to the computer and the phone calls that keep the adrenalin pumping when we need to relax and sleep. Down time daily can be a simple as a lunchtime stroll in the fresh air with the mobile switched off.
“It is important to be totally unavailable sometimes. Regular bedtimes, days off and holidays have a cumulative affect on our ability to truly relax. Add these disciplinary measures to healthy eating, good posture, a healthy breathing technique and regular exercise and you will notice how much more efficiently you can handle all aspect of your life.”
