HAPPINESS AND BREATHING WELL

from The Blue Mountains Gazette

“When someone feels peacefully happy they automatically breathe better” says Jennifer Harris of Buteyko “Breathe Easy”. “The catch is that in the modern world of overloaded schedules that seem to allow little time to plan well balanced meals, walks in the sunshine and regular sleep times, the body’s supply of serotonin can easily run into deficit. It is then easy to get into negative thought habits that deplete the production of serotonin even more. Serotonin is the brain chemical that makes us feel peaceful, capable, balanced and happy. Hyperventilation or over breathing is an automatic response to the distress produced by the chemical imbalance.

If a dull day makes you feel blue then you probably lack serotonin. Sunlight is vital in the production of serotonin. If you already have breathing related problems like asthma, allergies, sinusitis and sleep apnea these conditions will likely worsen in response to low serotonin.

A few changes in lifestyle will help you to rebalance your feel good chemical. Here is a list;

  1. Lunchtime walks outside and relaxed exercise such as stretching, swimming and yoga are ideal.
  2. Eat lots of vegetables, some skinless chicken, almonds, turkey and red meat.
  3. Take regular pause breaks in your day, week and year.
  4. Have a set bedtime and wake up time - even on weekends.
  5. Give and get lots of hugs, pat your pets and have a massage when you can.
  6. Learn how to breathe healthily.

Healthy breathing habits enhance the benefits of all the other points on this list.”
