HOW WELL DO YOU BREATHE?

from The Blue Mountains Gazette

“I am often asked to give a definition of healthy breathing” says Jennifer Harris of Buteyko Breathe Easy. “Good posture plus the ability to relax results in healthy breathing. This is quite hard to achieve without professional guidance. The relaxation part is probably the most challenging as it is our emotions which drive the depth and rate of our breathing. When we become distressed the “fight or flight” response is activated and induces us to breathe bigger, faster and more erratically in times of intense pressure. The ability to control the breathing is a powerful tool for relaxation and provides a solid foundation for good health.

How well a person breathes is largely determined by their actual technique of breathing. Better breathing results in better health. A person who has a poor breathing technique will be far less healthy than someone who is a healthy breather. Here are a few clues as to whether you have a problem with your breathing technique.

  1. Do you breathe through your mouth at all- day or night?
  2. Can you hear yourself breathe?
  3. Do you suffer from any breathing related disorder such as asthma, snoring, sleep apnoea, eczema, anxiety, allergies, bronchitis, dental deformities or chronic mouth breathing?
  4. Do you ever get breathless moving about, exercising at any level or even simply when talking?

If you have answered yes to any of these questions then learning to breathe correctly will make an enormous difference to your health.”
