Medical thumbs up to breathing exercises II
from The Blue Mountains Gazette
“News from the Woolcock Institute at Sydney University this week reports that simple breathing techniques and upper body exercises can greatly reduce the symptoms of asthma” says Jennifer Harris of Buteyko Breathe Easy. With a big knowing smile on her face Jennifer continued “this is news that we Buteyko Breathing Practitioners have been trying to bring to the public for the sixteen years that the Buteyko Method has been in Australia. Medical Professor Konstantin P. Buteyko founded his now world famous Breathing technique in Russia over fifty years ago and spent the ensuing fifty years refining this work and saving hundreds of thousands of lives of folk with all kinds of ailments- not just asthma. Professor Buteyko began by using breathing techniques to reverse his own life threatening condition of malignant hypertension, which is fatally high blood pressure.
Learning to breathe correctly is vitally important for good health. Maintaining good health is something about which each of us needs to take an active role. The same negative lifestyle habits of poor diet, lack of exercise, poor posture and poor breathing techniques that lead to asthma and other respiratory conditions also lead to other serious conditions such as obesity. In fact obesity and asthma often go hand in hand.
As a Pilates teacher with a background in massage and osteopathy I combine all this knowledge in working with each client on an individual basis. I’m very happy that the medical research world is now inadvertently giving my work with both breathing exercises and physical exercises the thumbs up.”
