ANXIETY TOUCHES US ALL
from The Blue Mountains Gazette
“When people ask me what affects the breathing my reply is life and the lens through which you perceive it.” Says Jennifer Harris of Buteyko Breathe Easy.
“Beginning with genetic inheritance, tribal values and self limiting beliefs, environment (internal, external, physical and emotional), posture, exercise or lack of, there is a myriad of factors that can challenge our well being.
One factor that has become paramount in my personal experience, and, therefore has made me more aware of in my clients, is anxiety. We can "band-aid" our anxiety levels with good diet, exercise and so forth but until we do enough emotional work through meditation, counselling, reading, study etc and most importantly through controlled relaxation/tension exercises to send massages of relaxation to the parasympathetic nervous system and relax the mind, body and breathing we will suffer physical symptoms. I emphasize here that healthy breathing is the underpinning of good health. This fact brings us cyclically back to "What affects the breathing". I must stress that without working on the breathing concurrently all steps taken toward better health are severely diminished in benefit.
I have just made a CD of the controlled tension/controlled relaxation exercise that I spoke about. We're working on the cover and hopefully the CD will be on sale by June this year. I am currently trialling the work with all my students - Pilates and Breathing. The results are very encouraging.”
