ADENOIDS AND BREATHING

from The Blue Mountains Gazette

“Many young children suffer from chronically infected adenoids which become so enlarged that they cannot breathe through their nose” says Jennifer Harris of Buteyko Breathe Easy. “This condition of continual infection and the forced mouth breathing depletes the child’s immune system, sets the Hyperventilation Syndrome in motion thereby paving the way for conditions such as asthma, bronchitis, allergies, blocked eustachian tubes, dental and facial deformities – to name only a few problems” Jennifer continued. “Concerned parents have phoned me recently after having been told by their doctor that the infected adenoids should be removed surgically. They are usually hoping to find a natural solution. These parents had heard that learning to breathe healthily boosts the immune system which in turn would enable the body to throw off the infection. This is true when I am able to work with the child’s breathing before the adenoids are too enlarged.

I have to tell them that if the adenoids are blocking the nasal passages that it is impossible to teach the child to breathe through the nose. It is certainly helpful to seek reliable naturopathic counsel and provide the child with optimal dietary support and lifestyle changes. However, when a child has chronically infected adenoids it is vital to seek the counsel of an ear, nose and throat specialist and if surgery is recommended it must be considered.

After the obstruction has been removed I can then re-educate the child to breathe healthily which will assist the recovery of the child’s system, prevent some future major health challenges and nip the dental deformities in the bud. Mostly, infected adenoids would not be an issue if parents would realize the health problems that mouth breathing engenders and seek remedial breathing the moment they notice the child is breathing in this unhealthy way.”
