EXERCISE, SPORT & BREATHING

from The Blue Mountains Gazette

“It is very important to drop the idea that you must undertake very vigorous physical activity to get fit and healthy” says Jennifer Harris of Buteyko “Breathe Easy”.

“Many athletes and sports people experience burn out, fatigue, repetitive or non healing injury and breathing difficulties by pushing their body to the limit while breathing incorrectly. Anyone who attempts this with the use of bronchodilators may be even more at risk. Sadly there are some athletes who see bronchodilators as performance enhancing drugs. Professor Buteyko saw this practice as putting the user at risk by forcing unnatural performance while suppressing a defence mechanism.

If people have breathing difficulties when they exercise it is vital that they learn to breathe correctly. Step one is to correct the breathing at rest. Step two is to maintain correct breathing with daily routine movement such as walking and housework. Step three is to get back into individual and team sport activities while maintaining good breathing.

We are as healthy as our ability to breathe well. Start by going only as fast as your nose will let you. Being a Pilates and dance teacher as well as a Buteyko Breathing Practitioner I specialise in assisting people to synchronise breathing and movement.”
