“HELP! MY THREE YEAR OLD HAS ASTHMA”
from The Blue Mountains Gazette
Lisa X. was very distraught when she phoned me to ask if there is anything that could be done to help her three year old son’s newly diagnosed condition of asthma. With great pleasure I assured Lisa that there certainly is. I explained that by educating HER about asthma, good prevention, healthy breathing and modest lifestyle changes as well as working with both Lisa and Billy on his breathing this “life sentence” of asthma would be either greatly diminished or a “thing of the past”.
If you can relate to Lisa’s story then you too will be relieved to know that both you and your child can be gently guided to have better health through better breathing. It is vital that you follow the guidelines of “prevention as prescribed by your doctor and dilation ONLY WHEN NEEDED”. It can be difficult to recognize the “when needed” part at first. This is where reassuring education is so valuable. With healthy breathing strategies and adequate prevention, life will be far more relaxed. I personally spent countless nights helping my two year old to breathe. That is, until we “discovered” Buteyko Breathing when he was twelve.
Parents, please encourage your children to always breathe through their nose, eat fresh fruit and vegetables daily, stay away from sugary foods, get lots of exercise (with their mouths shut), sit and stand tall, don’t slouch, drink plenty of clean water- not soft drinks, wash their hands before food and go to bed early.
Another tip. Intestinal infestations such as worms raise the eosinophil ( a type of granulocytic white blood cell) level in the blood. Some of the major chemical mediators that cause bronchoconstriction in asthma are released by eosinophils. Have you wormed your child lately? This simple precaution may mean less asthma.
