BEDWETTING AND BREATHING LINK

 According to a recent article in the “New Scientist” magazine there is a definite link between breathing and bedwetting in both children and adults. This is not news to Buteyko practitioners around the globe. We find that many children brought to us for respiratory conditions such as asthma, bronchitis, sinusitis and chronic mouth breathing are also bed wetters. Interestingly, once the breathing is corrected and the asthma and such are no longer a problem, so too does the bedwetting stop. Why?

When an individual over breathes, that is to breathe more than 10 times per minute at rest, the carbon dioxide (the gas which plays an indispensable role in the delivery of oxygen throughout the body) level is depleted causing all smooth muscle to contract. Smooth muscle lines all hollow organs, organs such as heart, lungs, stomach, uterus, vein and arteries, the bladder and all tubular structures in the body. When the bladder and associated tubes constrict you need to go to the “loo”. The problem with bed wetters is that they are usually too sound asleep to wake up and respond to the “call of Nature”. This is when “disaster” strikes. No amount of “psychologising”, bribery, scolding or consequential punishment can work. Stress of any kind increases the breathing rate so any added psychological pressure will worsen the problem. This applies also to extreme cases of sleep apnea in adults. Learning to breathe correctly so that the mouth stays shut all the time, PARTICULARLY AT NIGHT is the answer. Better breathing leads to better health in EVERY area of life, physical and emotional.
