BREATHLESS GARDENING

from The Blue Mountains Gazette

I love our garden & working the enormous variety of tasks required to nurture the six huge vegetable beds, fruit trees, natives & ornamentals. So when a client contacts me and says that they get breathless when they try to work in their garden I completely understand their frustration.

One of the key problems is the amount of bending and lifting. Some clients even find themselves breathless just WALKING around their garden. With all this in mind I teach programmes of breathing exercises and breathing with movement to help my clients get back into their gardening as soon as possible. Each client has their own programme designed to meet their specific needs.

Margaret S. came to me with severe breathlessness. She is in her mid seventies and apart from emphysema is a healthy woman who had always been vibrantly active. Tending her delightful garden and walking her dog are her greatest pleasures. Margaret had one lesson per week for five weeks. She practised diligently in between until she had changed her old breathing habits for new healthy ones. Improvement was immediate for her and by the end of five weeks Margaret was not only able to garden happily and walk her dog but walk up Katoomba Street! I was thrilled for her.

As well as the individual breathing and breathing with movement classes, I have just started up a group breathing with movement class at Hazelbrook Public School every Wednesday at 1.45 – 3.10 pm. The class is starting to fill up but I have a few more vacancies.
