OBESITY and BREATHING
from The Blue Mountains Gazette
People who breathe well enjoy being in their ideal weight range. Conversely, those people who do not breathe well are more likely to be overweight to obese. When you correct your breathing the body is able to improve all it’s functions. The metabolism usually speeds up so that nutrient absorption improves. As a result body weight normalises.
There is grave concern in Australia about the increase in the number of overweight people in our population. One in five children are now overweight. Without correction these children will grow up to be overweight adults. Being out of the “normal” weight range can lead to life threatening illnesses such as heart disease, asthma, sleep apnoea and diabetes. At Buteyko “Breathe Easy”, students not only learn to breathe well but also learn to address the lifestyle habits that lead to weight gain and a worsening of breathing. In “carousel” fashion there is a vicious circle in action. Overeating makes it very hard to breathe at all. Remember how you feel after Christmas dinner? Blood sugar difficulties particularly challenge the respiratory system and visa versa. Breathing well means better health, more energy, better sleep, even temperament and clear thinking.
