Panic Attacks & Hyperventilation

from The Blue Mountains Gazette, Wednesday, July 18, 2001

Mary B. was totally housebound by her severe hyperventilation & associated panic attacks by the time she contacted me. She had noticed for some years that she had been becoming more & more breathless, suffered from debilitating allergies, blocked nose & headaches. It seemed that she was becoming more allergic to more things.

With a family to care for the limitations Mary & her family were placed under by Mary’s condition were almost intolerable. Worry over this fact made Mary hyperventilate more often. A vicious circle was in force & Mary could find no help. Her attacks caused not only breathing restriction but tremors & fainting.

I must explain here that in a full blown hyperventilation attack the brain is deprived of about 50% of its oxygen. When the master control is starved of oxygen the body responds with frightening symptoms. Symptoms all arising from overbreathing – big time overbreathing!

One month of diligent work on the Buteyko Breathing program saw Mary with enough returned health both physically & psychologically to be resuming a normal life. The added rewards of corrected breathing for Mary are no more headaches or blocked nose and allergies subsiding. The difference improved health has made to this brave lady’s life is fantastic!

Those people unfortunate enough to suffer from panic & hyperventilation attacks need to work with a Buteyko Breathing teacher on an individual basis.

People suffering other symptoms of overbreathing such as asthma, rhinitis, sinusitis, breathlessness, headaches, mouth breathing with its’ associated dental & breathing problems, fatigue etc. are now able to take advantage of a new offer by the Village Fitness Centre (Leura) & myself. We are offering a ten week ( one hour class per week) course in Correct Breathing at a reduced rate. With most health funds now granting refunds for Buteyko courses this offer is a bargain!

For more information on either hyperventilation & panic attacks or the Village Fitness Centre course phone Jennifer Harris practitioner member of the Buteyko Institute of Breathing & Health on 0414 833 857.
