Shut Your Mouth And Save Your Breath

from The Blue Mountains Gazette, Wednesday, May 16, 2001

Are you and your loved ones healthy nose breathers or do you chronically breathe through the mouth?

Waking or sleeping, mouth breathing is a highly dangerous practice that results in an enormous range of physical symptoms. Try this list for starters :-

headache, elongated face, malocclusion, anterior open bite (how much do you want to spend on orthodontia & braces?), temporomandibular joint dysfunction (jaw out of alignment), reduced dental arch space (increased need for tooth extraction), loss of lip tone - with the lips becoming larger and more flaccid, gum disease (which may lead to heart disease), dental decay, dry mouth and throat, increased allergen/airborne infection entry to lungs (cold and flu), chronic tonsil swelling, enlarged adenoids, polyps, noisy breathing, noisy eating, bad breath, snoring, apnea, greater potential for relapse of orthodontic corrections (wasted money), increased mucous production, overbreathing and hypocapnia (low carbon dioxide levels in the body).

The last item on the afore mentioned list has the serious consequences of :-

  1. reduced efficiency of oxygenation giving rise to fatigue.
  2. bronchospasm which leads to asthma.
  3. respiratory alkalosis leading to metabolic and immune dysfunction.
  4. release of histamine from mast cells causing inflammation.
