Snoring and Constipation
from The Blue Mountains Gazette, Wednesday, January 17, 2001
Following the appearance of the article on sleep apnoea, snoring and sleep disturbances in the last Healthy Living I have been flooded with folk needing help in all these areas.
One lady phoned me in great distress saying that she was extremely embarrassed to have been told by her camping buddies that her snoring was quite a problem to them. Poor Mary X. wasn't even aware that she snored- let alone loudly!! Three days into her Buteyko programme Mary reported that many other little health "niggles" had disappeared. Amongst them her chronic constipation.
This is not at all surprising as when the breathing is corrected the carbon dioxide level is corrected and one major role of carbon dioxide in the body is that of smooth muscle dilator. Smooth muscle is found lining all hollow organs in the
body - e.g. the bronchial tree, stomach, heart, veins and arteries, bladder, uterus, lungs and, of course, the bowel. With the dilation of the smooth muscle in the bowel comes relief from constipation. Dietary issues may also be involved.
Mary X was so impressed with the effects of her breathing program on her own health that she has enrolled her 16 year old son in the Buteyko Program also.
This move was loudly applauded by her son's orthodontist who is well aware of the importance of converting this young mouth breather into a healthy nose breather. Orthodontists are only too aware of the myriad of negative effects on young teeth, gums and occlusions caused by mouth breathing.
