Solving Sleep Problems

from The Blue Mountains Gazette, Wednesday, November 15, 2000

Snoring, insomnia and shortness of breath during sleep are all very distressing for the sufferer and also their loved ones. All of these conditions are symptoms of malfunction in the respiratory centre of the brain and are caused by overbreathing (hyperventilation).

Shortness of breath easily leads to panic attacks and certainly insomnia. This is of great concern to the breathless one. Snoring is more of a concern to those living with the snorer. Those poor folk who are tortured into insomnia by varying degrees of ghastly rasping noises. Apart from the constant erosion of sleep and therefore health to all concerned the snoring often becomes devastating to a relationship.

The most serious of all these sleep conditions is sleep apnoea. The sleep apnoea sufferer actually ceases to breath for periods of 10 seconds or longer and if they don't wake up they may die! It is an incredibly frightening condition and causes a myriad of other health problems ranging from heart conditions, over weight, depression and chronic tiredness which results in falling asleep at inappropriate times- like at business meetings or when driving!

One young married client of mine-Joe X- was only 33,had a beautiful wife, three young children , a mortgage and one income when he was advised to buy a C Pap machine so that he would not die in his sleep. Devastated that his life had come to this point and desperate because he did not have the $3,000 to buy the machine Joe in his search for a second hand machine 'accidentally' was referred to our Buteyko Breathing Centres. Joe began sleeping more comfortably and confidently from the first day of his Buteyko Course. His wife, apart from feeling relieved that Joe was breathing well all night, was so happy that she too was able to sleep not only with relief but without being tormented by snoring.

A Buteyko Institute of Breathing & Health registered practitioner can help you too. For the Blue Mountains area phone Jennifer Harris on 0414 833 857.
