Water, water, Pure Water Is The Drop To Drink!!!!
from The Hazelbrook PS Newsletter, Tuesday, November 20, 2001
With the long hot summer months upon us we need to make sure that we drink plenty of fluid to replace the losses caused by perspiration.
The lure of soft drinks, tea and coffee has distorted our ability to recognise true thirst. It is thirst alone that should tell us how much pure water to drink. Drinking anything with caffeine in it will dehydrate you more. So will anything sugary. Even fruit juices can be too concentrated and too sweet to replace the amount of fluid lost due to sweating. Always drink water before you have a cup of tea, coffee, cordial, soft drinks etc. Herbal teas are the exception and should be counted in your daily water intake.
It is safer to drink a little too much water during summer. Make sure that you have at least eight glasses of pure water per day. If you eat a diet high in fruits and vegetables you won’t need to drink quite as much as someone whose diet consists of concentrated foods such as cereals & protein.
Children who suffer from headaches should always be told to drink two or three glasses of water before being offered a headache tablet. The most frequent cause of headaches is dehydration.
If your mouth is dry you are well and truly on your way to dehydration.
The only time not to drink water is with a meal. In fact all fluids should be consumed thirty minutes either side of a meal. Drinking with meals disrupts the digestive process.
