Good Posture Leads To Good Health

from The Hazelbrook PS Newsletter, Tuesday, October 23, 2001

One of my primary school teachers used to say that you write with your feet.

What she meant was that if you sit up straight with your feet firmly on the ground your handwriting will be much neater. SHE WAS RIGHT.

Your ability to perform any task depends on good posture whether you are standing or sitting.

Stand and sit up tall as if there is a wire from the top of your head to the sky with your back straight and your shoulders back and down. Now imagine that your tailbone is stretching to the ground. This is great posture and will help your body to be much healthier. You see, just like a building needs a firm structure and straight foundation so do people.

You can’t even breathe correctly if you slouch. Since you breathe about 30,000 time per day you certainly need to do it right and having good posture is a great start to good breathing.

Your food cannot digest properly if you slouch either. Your tummy is right in the middle where most people "fold up" when they slouch.

You will be amazed at how much more energy you will have if you work hard to improve your posture.

You will think clearer and start to look and feel as if you care more about yourself- it’s called self esteem.

Learning sports like Thai Chi and Taekwondo, swimming, dancing, gymnastics, yoga and Pilates

Stretch will definitely help you to learn healthy posture. Hazelbrook School offers all kinds of sports and dance programmes both in school and after school. I encourage you all to take advantage of them. Lawson Pool has reopened. I’ve been swimming every day since it opened it is a wonderful facility.

Mums if you want to learn Pilates stretch we have classes for you at the school. In fact for dance, stretch and healthy breathing classes call Jenny on 47 58 6662. If you have any general health questions I’d be happy to answer them in this regular health tips column.
